Learn About The Homeless
It often comes as a surprise to us that so many individuals and familys live on the streets without a place to call home.
Santa Saks is headquartered in Missoula County, comprised of a population of over 101,400 people (U.S. Census Bureau 2006 estimate). According to the 2008 Montana Homeless Survey, there were 906 homeless people in Missoula County on January 31, 2008, which is a sixty-three percent increase over the count of 553 in 2007. Last year the results were shocking:
- 13 % are children under 18
- 32% homeless are parents
- 53% are male
- 60 % are 30-59 years old
- 17% have attended college
- 15% have military experience
- 7% are mentally ill
- Veteran’s make up a large portion of homeless people – 25% nationwide. 89% are honorably discharged. 64% served in Vietnam and after, and 67% served 3 or more years in the service. Montana has over 100,000 veterans, ranking 10th per capita in the nation. Needless to say, you cannot speak of homelessness without thinking of veterans.
